Refresh Rate ÷ Scan Mode: What Does It Really Mean?

Meta Description: Refresh rate divided by scan mode gives the row switching frequency. Learn why 7680Hz + 1/32 scan demands higher performance driver ICs – and why it matters for your rental LED display.

Introduction

You’ve seen specs like 7680Hz refresh rate and 1/32 scan mode. But have you ever divided one by the other? The result tells you how hard your driver IC is working – and why not all high refresh screens are equal.

Caption: Scan mode determines how many rows are lit at once. Higher scan = more work for the driver IC.

The Simple Formula

Row switching frequency = Refresh rate ÷ Scan mode denominator

Example: 3840Hz ÷ 1/16 scan = 3840 ÷ 16 = 240Hz

This 240Hz is not the refresh rate of each row (every row still refreshes at 3840Hz). It is the row switching frequency – how many times per second the driver IC moves to the next row.

Caption: 1/16 scan means the driver IC cycles through 16 rows repeatedly. Higher refresh = faster cycling.

Why This Matters
  • Higher refresh rate (e.g., 7680Hz vs 3840Hz) doubles the row switching frequency.
  • Higher scan mode (e.g., 1/32 scan vs 1/16 scan) also doubles the row switching frequency.

When you combine both – say 7680Hz refresh + 1/32 scan – the driver IC must run four times faster than a 3840Hz + 1/16 scan screen.

That demands better driver ICs, better PCB design, and tighter thermal management.

Guide Visual’s Advantage

Our G10 and GS series achieve 7680Hz refresh even with 1/32 scan (indoor) and 1/16 scan (outdoor). We use premium driver ICs like Chipone ICN2153 and Macroblock MBI5124 to handle the extra load – delivering flicker free, broadcast ready images without compromise.

Conclusion

Divide refresh rate by scan mode, and you get a glimpse of the engineering behind the screen. Higher ratios demand better components. That’s why Guide Visual builds every rental LED display with over spec’d driver ICs – so you get stable, brilliant images show after show.
